Intravenous (IV) sedation in dentistry is a method of administering anti-anxiety medication directly into the bloodstream during dental procedures. The primary aim of this sedation is to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable while receiving dental treatment.
IV sedation is often referred to as ‘conscious sedation’ because it doesn’t put you fully to sleep like general anesthesia. Instead, you’ll be in a deeply relaxed state but still responsive and able to communicate with your dental team. However, most patients don’t remember much about the procedure afterward due to the amnesic effect of the drugs used.
To administer IV sedation, a thin needle is inserted into a vein, usually in your arm or back of your hand. The dentist has precise control over the amount of sedative you receive. Your vital signs like heart rate and oxygen levels are closely monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your safety.
IV sedation is particularly useful for individuals who have severe dental anxiety, those undergoing extensive dental procedures, or patients with a strong gag reflex. Despite its benefits, it’s crucial that IV sedation is administered by a trained professional with the necessary equipment to monitor the patient’s response.
